BMW Electric: Everything you need to know.

BMW Electric Vehicles.

  • Battery electric (BEV). This is powered only by electricity (100% electric).
  • Plug in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). This is powered by a battery, electric drive motor and an internal combustion engine. You can drive using either option, and once the electric battery has run out, your car will automatically continue driving in hybrid mode. This means you will never have to worry about range limitations.

Charging at home.

What you'll need:

When purchasing your Electric car, you will need to have a Pod Point Wallbox installed, and will need to purchase a Flexible Charging Cable. The BMW Pod Point Wallbox is called 'The Solo 3'. The solo 3 is available with models offering charging rates of either 3.6kW, 7kW or 22kW. It also comes with 3 year warranty.

The BMW Flexible Charging Cable has a charging capacity of up to 11kW and is adaptable for both domestic and industrial sockets. This means you can use it to charge your car at home, as well as on the go. This is why many of our customers choose to store the cable in the boot of their car.

Tip: To preserve your cars battery life, it is recommended to follow the 80/20 rule when charging. This means that you should start recharging your car once the battery reaches 20%, and you should stop charging it once it reaches 80% charge.

Charging in Public.

As standard BMW equipment, your new Electric vehicle will also come with a 5 metre public charging cable, that has the capacity to charge up to 22kW. This allows for faster charging times and prevents long waits when stopping to charge your car.

We also recommend downloading the My BMW App. This is because connected charging in the My BMW App will provide you with all the information about your cars charging status, available range, costs and charging duration, as well as identify where the nearest charging points are for you.

Lastly, to reassure that you will have a smooth-sailing charging experience on longer journeys, our BMW partners, BP Pulse and IONITY, have created more than 173,000 high power charging points in mainland Europe, and are continually expanding. This means wherever you are, you can drive knowing your BMW will always have charge and the charging time will be no longer than a coffee break.
